Shell and SLB are joining forces once again, this time to tackle one of the oil industry’s most persistent headaches: fragmented upstream data. The two companies announced in December 2025 that they are expanding their digital partnership to develop AI-powered tools aimed at streamlining how producers analyze and act on operational data.

The move lands at a pivotal moment for the U.S. shale sector, where growth has slowed and attention is shifting to squeezing more value from mature wells rather than drilling new ones. By improving how data flows between subsurface, drilling, and production systems, the collaboration aims to make decision-making faster, cheaper, and more consistent.

SLB will supply its Lumi data and AI platform, designed to bring together decades of operational information into a single digital framework. Shell says this approach should help reduce uncertainty and improve the reliability of upstream decisions, particularly in complex or aging fields.

“This collaboration is about accelerating AI adoption at scale,” said Rakesh Jaggi, an SLB executive, calling it a step toward more connected, data-centric operations across the industry.

The alliance also reflects a broader competitive trend among oilfield technology providers. Companies are vying to offer integrated digital ecosystems rather than isolated tools, hoping to give operators a clearer picture of performance and capital efficiency.

Still, the road to fully digitalized upstream operations is not without obstacles. Integrating legacy data is notoriously difficult, and ensuring that AI insights are both transparent and trusted remains critical. With cloud-based platforms becoming more common, cybersecurity and governance will demand equal attention.

Even so, the Shell and SLB partnership signals momentum toward a more connected energy landscape, where better data, not just new drilling, drives the next phase of efficiency.
